With the arrival of spring, we experienced a severe weather event on April 15th that…
Field Day 2018 was a pleasant success for our organization. We had better than average participation, no rain, a slight breeze, hands on training experience for new hams, and lots of comradery. It was held at the Regional Military Museum in Houma, LA. We made a short day of it, closing down operations at 6PM, due to daylight restrictions by the museum.
We operated on John,WB5PDZ’s Go-Box (Yaesu FT-891), and on Francis,WD5CFM’s 20m and 40m dipoles for HF, and on Craig, KK5CM’s Kenwood 791D radio for VHF talk-in and digital APRS.
The museum provided the space, generator, diesel, restrooms, and plenty of hospitality for our group!
A visit to their facility on 1154 Barrow Street in Houma is a MUST SEE!
We are beefing up our APRS network in the Houma, LA area. During the last 30 days we installed an APRS digipeater at the Theriot repeater site. This digipeater is both repeating digital packets and digitally transmitting room temperature and battery bank voltage telemetry to the APRS system. However, since the Theriot site has no internet access and has marginal reception by our digipeater at Gray, LA, WB5PKK also installed a digipeater at his home in Houma, LA, to close the gap. Our plans are to include yet another digipeater at the new, yet to be disclosed, location of the 444.500 System Fusion repeater which should be substantially higher than our current 40 foot elevation to make APRS coverage nothing short of awesome for our area.
Earlier this month, we enjoyed our June 2018 Dinner Social at Bubba’s II Restaurant in Thibodaux, LA. The view was scenic overlooking Bayou Lafourche, the food was delicious, and the like-minded fellowship was out of this world!
Come join us next month for the July 2018 Dinner Social to be held at Walk-Ons Restaurant in Houma. Consult the calendar page on W5YL.org for directions and menu.
