May 2018 Update

Ed Morris, KZ5K (sk) pictured teaching his method of learning Morse Code at our April 2018 General Business Meeting

We are saddened by the loss of one of our very active members , Mr. Ed Morris, KZ5K (sk), last week due to a sudden onset of internal bleeding from which he never recovered. Ed was an avid CW Operator who delighted in teaching the membership his methods to learn Morse Code at our April and May Business Meetings this year. His sudden departure from us was a shock to us all. We will keep his wife and family in our thoughts and prayers as he will surely be missed.

On a brighter note, we have repaired the air conditioner at the 147.390 Gray repeater site. Thanks to the hard work of John, KB7ZMD, we were able to repair one of the broken a/c units to keep as a working spare.

Also, thanks to Craig, KK5CM, we were able to add a temperature probe to the APRS telemetry at the 147.390 Gray repeater. Now we are able to monitor both voltage on the battery bank and room temperature via an APRS radio or online. To view the voltage and temperature online, read the COMMENT line on the KK5CM-3 link right HERE. We have plans to install another similar APRS station at the 147.300 Theriot site next month.

The GiveNOLA Day fundraiser was a success once again. We tentatively raised $235 in basic donations, not counting the soon to be revealed lagniappe fund collected by GNOF. We expect to know the actual dollars we collected by next month.

We held our 2nd Quarter Board of Directors Meeting May 12th at the Terrebonne Parish Library North Branch. The minutes of the meeting will be published on the DOCUMENTS page of W5YL.org very soon.

We are pumped up about Field Day 2018 to be held on June 23rd at the Regional Military Museum of Houma ANNEX. We will be located in the pavilion next to the fighter aircraft across the street from the actual museum. Our participation will be limited this year to only Saturday afternoon, from noon until 6:00PM, due to restrictions from the museum management.

This month’s Dinner Social was held May 21st at Song Phi Nong Restaurant in Houma, LA. Their Thai and Asian cuisine is the finest in the area. We had a great time, with great food, and like-minded friends–a good time was had by all. We hope to see everyone at the June Dinner Meeting at Bubba’s II Seafood Restaurant (NOT Bubba’s II Po-Boy) in Thibodaux, LA on June 18th. Directions to the correct restaurant can be found on the CALENDAR page of  W5YL.org .
